Mental Health Education

This study program will teach you how to communicate effectively with people who have mental health issues. You will learn how to use a person-centred and strengths-based approach, and how to engage people in a respectful and supportive way. You will also learn how to use respectful language and communication methods, and how to recognise the communication styles and preferences of individuals. You will develop basic counselling skills to listen and respond, and communicate orally as required by your organisation/service. You will also learn how to deal with cross cultural communication issues, and how to practice mindfully and reflectively. In addition, you will demonstrate the ability to use a range of communication strategies, such as reflective listening and respectful responding, developing empathy and rapport, active listening and recognising non-verbal cues, giving and receiving feedback, interpreting messages and meanings, setting role boundaries and negotiating outcomes, being congruent in your communication and action, following up on communication and ensuring clarity, and using non-verbal communication appropriately.

Disability Service Education

This study program will help you to work with people with disabilities in a respectful and supportive way. You will learn how to:

• Understand consent and how to check if someone can give it

• Avoid discrimination and promote inclusion

• Recognise different types of disabilities and their effects

• Identify and manage safety risks

• Communicate effectively with people with disabilities and use appropriate resources

• Respect consumer needs and rights and follow duty of care

• Adapt to different disability requirements and support needs

• Know the stages of human development and how they relate to disability

• Spot signs of abuse and/or neglect and report them

• Connect with networks in the disability sector

• Apply principles and practices of access, equity, confidentiality and empowerment

• Follow relevant legislation, regulations and policies, including those related to restrictive and prohibitive practices

• Contribute to the sustainability of your workplace and the environment

• Understand the role of guardianship board, public trustee and independent advocate

• Deal with emotional, relationship and independence issues at different life stages

  Aged Care Service 

This study program will help you to work with older people who have complex needs This unit covers the knowledge and skills that workers need to help the older person who has complex or special care needs under the guidance of a relevant professional Essential knowledge: The candidate must show that they have the essential knowledge to do the task skills; task management skills; contingency management skills and job/role environment skills as outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit This includes knowing about: • What your work role and responsibilities are • How ageing affects the body and mind and how to assess, monitor and evaluate the service needs of the older person who has complex or special needs as it relates to your work role • The policies, protocols and practices of your organisation that relate to your work role • The social model of disability • How social devaluation can affect a person’s quality of life • How to use competency and image enhancement to address devaluation • What elder abuse is and how to recognise it • What common health problems are associated with ageing, how they look like, what to do about them and when to refer • How cultural and individual differences can affect how you plan and deliver services • What different health professionals do and how they work together • What kinds of community services are available and what they offer • What carers do and how to support them • How to assess individuals who have complex and/or special needs • What assessment tools are used for complex and/or special needs • How to analyse.

 Supervising Service 

This study program will teach you how to supervise the work of workers who are part of a team/workgroup or working alone. You will learn how to induct new staff and plan work, monitor performance and support workers to manage their workload, support effective team processes and work functions, address legal, legislative and industrial requirements, and manage work-related issues. You will also learn essential knowledge about available workplace support mechanisms, effective team management, principles and practices to enhance sustainability in the workplace, industrial relations - principles and current issues, legislation relevant to organisation and work carried out, level of underpinning knowledge as required by individual being supervised, networking and information exchange processes, organisation mission, philosophy, organisation structure, policies and procedures and relevant organisation guidelines, especially human resource management policies, strategies and available resources to meet staff development needs, union documents/ guidelines/ policies and relevant unions and contacts, and workplace employment awards or agreements and work conditions.
