Mental Health Education

This study program will teach you how to communicate effectively with people who have mental health issues. You will learn how to use a person-centred and strengths-based approach, and how to engage people in a respectful and supportive way. You will also learn how to use respectful language and communication methods, and how to recognise the communication styles and preferences of individuals. You will develop basic counselling skills to listen and respond, and communicate orally as required by your organisation/service. You will also learn how to deal with cross cultural communication issues, and how to practice mindfully and reflectively. In addition, you will demonstrate the ability to use a range of communication strategies, such as reflective listening and respectful responding, developing empathy and rapport, active listening and recognising non-verbal cues, giving and receiving feedback, interpreting messages and meanings, setting role boundaries and negotiating outcomes, being congruent in your communication and action, following up on communication and ensuring clarity, and using non-verbal communication appropriately.

 Supervising Service 

This study program will teach you how to supervise the work of workers who are part of a team/workgroup or working alone. You will learn how to induct new staff and plan work, monitor performance and support workers to manage their workload, support effective team processes and work functions, address legal, legislative and industrial requirements, and manage work-related issues. You will also learn essential knowledge about available workplace support mechanisms, effective team management, principles and practices to enhance sustainability in the workplace, industrial relations - principles and current issues, legislation relevant to organisation and work carried out, level of underpinning knowledge as required by individual being supervised, networking and information exchange processes, organisation mission, philosophy, organisation structure, policies and procedures and relevant organisation guidelines, especially human resource management policies, strategies and available resources to meet staff development needs, union documents/ guidelines/ policies and relevant unions and contacts, and workplace employment awards or agreements and work conditions.
